Snowball quilt
by Ida Pierson
Elam
(1890-1976). Ida lived on a farm in
Northwest Missouri and was divorced
in 1912, leaving her alone to work
her farm and support her 2 year old
son. Ida was an independent,
self-made woman, working as a
quilter, driving the school wagon
pulled by horses, as telephone
operator and executive housekeep and
cafeteria worker at a nursing home
for 20 years. Photo of Ida with her
son, Gifford Pierson Elam in 1912
included with quilt and free
Heavenly Patchwork book in
which her story appears. Tragically,
Gifford died at age 27 on his wife's
2lst birthday when their son Bill
was only 3 years old. This quilt was
bought from Bill Elam who took care
of Ida in his home the last years of
her life. He said the quilts had to
have been made in 1935 or before
since Ida's eyesight didn't allow
her to continue quilting after that.

Hand pieced, appliqued and quilted at 12 stitches/inch in feather wreathes, 1/2" grid, ivy vine, pinecone chain with double line motifs with grid and leaves in corner. Appraised by Carol Elmore, AQS appraiser, for $1200 each in January 2010. Included is ppraisal and photo of Edith Kunkel McKnight, from whose estate in Enid, Oklahoma the quilts came from. She was born in 1865 in St Joseph, Missouri where her father operated a grain mill. Edith married Chad McKnight and they moved to Enid where she lived to be 95 and died in 1980. Complete family provenance available with obituaries, and newspaper clipping about Edith giving a quilt program to the T & T Club in 1931 in which she probably showed these quilts.
